☕️Bi-Weekly Brew: San Francisco 49ers Edition

Welcome back to The Dynasty Cafe for 14th Edition of the ☕️Bi-Weekly Brew, where I provide some special blends for YOUR specific build.. Be sure to try out the previous Brew if you missed it!  Last time around, I took a dive into the Cardinals pool and made the case for acquiring Marvin Harrison (which feels icky given the recent development of his hands turning to stone in camp), Jeremiyah Love, and Trey McBride.  I even gave a look inside my rebuilding philosophy and why getting draft picks isn’t always the right move in a trade!  

Today, we stay in the NFC West and take a peak at the San Francisco 49ers.  I could make this article short and sweet: don’t acquire anyone from San Fran until they tear down the electrical substation near the practice facility.  However, some people believe more in the electrifying Shanahan scheme than the alleged injury-causing electromagnetic waves.  There are weapons for fantasy all over the field, and the 49ers have to be due for some positive injury luck (right?).  That begs the question: who should you target?  Let’s check out a few names below of players I would be looking to add or hold on my teams.

I want to preface this section with the following message before I go ahead and say nice things about Brock Purdy: I hate Brock Purdy.  I don’t want to see anything about Brock.  I don’t want to hear about Brock’s story of being Mr. Irrelevant.  Kyle Shanahan made him and everything he touches turns to gold.  Any QB could lead this team and have the same level of success.  Now that that’s off my chest…

Brock has many of the things you’re looking for in a fantasy QB.  He has a great offensive scheme, great weapons around him that can do a lot after the catch, and he can use his legs when needed.  Brock really put it together in the fantasy playoffs last year with finishes of QB4, QB1, and QB1 in weeks 15-17.  Talk about a league winner!  Brock is also only 26.6 and has a 5-year extension under his belt.  He’ll be leading San Fran for the foreseeable future.  His high weekly upside, age, and job security in one of the best offenses make him a player that can be comfortably added or kept on all rosters.  There are some question marks around him given his injury history, as well as the injury history of his weapons, but I'm willing to take the risk.  Contenders are getting a guy who has a steady floor in a high powered offense with the ability to win you a week at any given time.  Rebuilders are getting a QB that can be a building block for their team and a stable piece over the next half decade.  

What's the cost for Brock?  Here are a couple trades courtesy of Shark Tracker:

Both of these trades are equally good for a rebuilder and contender.  This is the first time throughout the series where the trades are good regardless of team build.  Let's break down why I would take trade one:

Jordan Love has only posted one Top 10 year, and there are question marks around his weapons.  Purdy's weapons also have some uncertainties, but they're objectively better than what Love has to work with.  Love is also in an offense that prefers to run it, and he doesn't have an elite pass-catching RB to dump it down to for cheap points.  Brock is a year younger, in a friendlier offense, and has more rushing upside.  If Brock and most of his weapons can stay healthy, it's a no brainer taking Brock over Love if you're contending.  As a rebuilder, it's not a franchise-changing improvement going from Purdy to Love, but you are securing a better QB for your team.  QBs are hard to come by, so you don't need to be making a title push to acquire a good one.  Purdy will be on your team for a few years and will still be producing as you wrap up your rebuild..  As a rebuilder, I'd consider this move if you replace Love with Baker Mayfield or Dak Prescott as well, though the trade would need slight tweaking if Dak was involved.  

Trade two is an easy accept for a contender, as they'll be looking to score points this season.  Brock can be a solid SF option to pair with the (hopefully) elite QB1 that is already on your contending roster.  For a rebuilder, just like in the NFL, it can be hard to get a QB.  Can you get a solid QB in the backend of the 2027 1st round?  That can't be guaranteed.  It also can't be guaranteed that the QB you do take turns out to be as good for fantasy as Brock Purdy.  This is an instance where I want the known commodity instead of the mystery box.  Secure your team's QB so you can check one roster spot off your list, and turn your focus to other needs.  

In summary, I wouldn't hesitate to do either trade as a rebuilder or contender.  Brock should be relevant for awhile, so I'm ok adding him regardless of when I'm looking to win.  

☕️Espresso Shot: Ricky Pearsall☕️

Like most 49ers, Ricky has been the victim of the injury bug over the last few seasons.  The 2024 1st round pick has always had hype surrounding him in the dynasty community, but has yet to live up to it.  This creates the perfect buy window for a rebuilder.  Pearsall enters Year 3 as the most explosive WR in the room, and I compare his upside to Brandon Aiyuk before he went insane in the membrane.  

Ricky sees the type of targets that can lead to explosive weeks.  Of WRs with 50+ targets, Ricky was 6th in aDot at 14.1 yards, and 14th in Yards/Rec at 14.7 yards.  In fantasy, this translated to four games of 13+ points in only 9 games of action.  He did also see 5 targets in over half the games he played, so there is some consistent usage.  You can see in the chart above how this aDot and yards per reception compares to some of the elite WRs in the game.  While I’m not saying he’s the next Ja’Marr Chase, I am saying he has the usage to become a high ceiling player for your team, and he can be bought for cheap right now.  Add him to your rebuilding team before the value skyrockets.  

Here's a trade recipe from the Sharp Tracker for acquiring Slick Rick:

This trade is basically just a dart throw for a dart throw.  However, the dart throw that is Ricky Pearsall comes with more knowns.  Let's compare what we know about Ricky and this pick. 

What we know about Ricky:

-Ricky is in a good offense

-Ricky has shown the ability to produce in said offense

-Ricky's team has their starting QB for the foreseeable future

-Lower value is due to injury issues, not performance

What we know about the Late 27 2nd:

-it'll be a late pick in the 2nd round of the 2027 rookie draft 

-it will gain value as time goes on, but not much in comparison to other assets

We don't know what player you're getting with that 2nd, what team said player is on, and if that player is even good.  You have a higher chance of Pearsall jumping in value for your team this coming season than the 27 2nd seeing a noticeable spike in value.  I'll choose to roll with the dart throw that has less question marks around it and a chance to give me a quick turnaround on my investment.  For what it's worth, I also don't mind this dart throw as a contender if you're searching for a high upside bench stash.

☕️The Dark Roast: George Kittle ☕️

George has been a staple of fantasy rosters at the TE position, providing owners with SIX Top 5 finishes in nine seasons.  Exclude injuries, and that number is likely higher.  Why would anyone sell a player like that you ask?  Two reasons: age and a torn Achilles.  George is 32.7 years of age and coming off a torn Achilles that he suffered last January.  Kittle was added onto the preseason physically unable to perform list (also known as PUP for those new to football), but is still eyeing a week one return somehow.  I’d be shocked if he doesn't miss time to start the year, which I think is the best case scenario anyways.  We don’t want him rushing back and injuring something else.

Kittle is just another high scoring piece that can be plugged into a contending lineup and unleashed when he returns to form.  If you’re adding Kittle, consider acquiring Jake Tonges as well.  He was a great fill-in when Kittle missed time,  providing 10+ points in five of the seven games he saw 39% or higher of snaps.  Buy the injury dip and get a Top 5 TE for your title push.

Let's discuss a trade I'd make for George Kittle, courtesy of Sharp Tracker:

Likely is getting a lot of buzz having followed his old coach from Baltimore to the Giants.  Likely is poised to be the top TE in NY, but I'm not certain Theo Johnson doesn't get some run too.  Also, Matt Nagy as his OC kills any excitement I have.  Assuming Likely isn't your only TE, I'd trade him for a chance of getting Kittle's ceiling come playoff time.  If Likely is your only TE, I also saw a lot of trades consisting of Kittle for future 2nds.  I like that move as well; there just wasn't as much to discuss with that.  As a contender, use your future capital to acquire talent for your title push.  That's been said a bunch over the course of this series.
