☕️Bi-Weekly Brew: Kansas City Chiefs Edition

Welcome back to The Dynasty Cafe for the 22nd edition of the ☕️Bi-Weekly Brew, where I provide some special blends for YOUR specific build. Last time out, we rode with Broncos Country and dissected Jaylen Waddle, Jonah Coleman, and old reliable Courtland Sutton.  Be sure to try out the previous Brew if you missed it!

Today, we head to Chiefs Kingdom and deep dive the Kansas City Chiefs.  Last year was a shock to Chiefs’ fans as the team missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014.  It certainly appears the empire is finally crumbling.  Kelce is another year older, and management has continued to struggle adding reliable receiving weapons.  However, they did invest in the running back room, bringing in Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III.  Are we going to see a more run-centric offense to keep some pressure off Mahomes as he recovers from injury?  On paper, they certainly aren’t the Chiefs of old.  However, it’s hard to count out a team led by Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid.  The offense is far from the early days of the Mahomes era, but there are still some interesting options for fantasy.  Let’s take a look at a few guys I’m looking to add!

For those that are new: welcome in!  Here’s what you’ll find in each edition of the ☕️Bi-Weekly Brew:

In each brew, we will assume super flex is in play, with full point PPR and .5 TEP. 

For each team, we’ll be identifying:

☕️Our House Blend: the perfect player for any build

☕️The Espresso Shot: a player to provide that high upside boost to your rebuilding team

☕️The Dark Roast: ole reliable, a player that can push a contender to its peak

☕️House Blend: Patrick Mahomes☕️

Last season, Mahomes returned to his Top 10 form after a modest 2024 campaign before missing the last few games due to injury.  In the 15 games Mahomes appeared in, he provided managers nine Top 10 finishes, with six coming in the Top 5!  It finally felt like Mahomes had returned to elite fantasy status, due in part to the addition of some rushing upside.  He had four rushing TDs in the first six weeks, tying his career high season total for rushing TDs before eventually setting his new high in Week 15.  In the absence of a deep passing attack, Mahomes’ weekly upside had been rather middling.  The addition of some rushing TDs elevates Mahomes ceiling back to the levels he was at when he was throwing bombs to Tyreek.  On top of this, Matt Nagy is gone!  The sky really is the limit now!

Despite a return to dominance, he is still discounted coming off an ACL/LCL tear that he suffered in Week 15.  This is the perfect situation for contenders and rebuilders alike.  Contenders can acquire a formidable QB to boost their QB room (ideally as a QB2), and rebuilders can get a QB who should be producing for the next decade to build their teams around.  A word to contenders: temper expectations to start the year.  I anticipate it’ll take a few weeks for Mahomes to ramp up and get back to his former self.  Come playoff time, he should be locked and loaded and ready to help produce during your playoff push.

Let's take a look at a couple trades for Mahomes, courtesy of Sharp Tracker:

I put this trade in solely because it incorporates not only ☕️ Our House Blend ☕️ selection, but also ☕️ The Dark Roast ☕️.  We're killing two birds with one stone here!  Purdy is fine enough for fantasy, but the question marks around the health of his weapons always concern me.  I also feel more confident Mahomes sticks around longer and produces more over time than Purdy.  Adding a stack for a relatively low cost is a huge win for a contender.  This trade also displays how low some people are on Mahomes.  While trading a QB for a QB doesn't help improve a team's QB depth, it does help out another area of your team (TE), and removes some uncertainty from your QB room.  I feel a lot more secure having Mahomes as my team's QB than Brock, all hate for Brock aside.  On top of that, no major draft pick assets are moved!  If the trade doesn't work out, you can still try and fill holes in the QB room through the draft.

Separate from this trade, as it is very specific, I'd also consider trading a 1st and 3rd for Mahomes, and may even go as high as a 1st and 2nd depending on how strong of a contender my team is.

For a rebuilder, this trade depends on the projected range of the 2028 1st.  If it's projected to be early, I'm likely holding or trying to move a different asset with Baker.  If it's mid or late, I'm good making this move.  As always, I'd look to get a little back on top of Mahomes.  The reasoning behind the move cycles back to the certainty of long term production.  We know (barring injury) Mahomes will be quarterbacking somewhere for a long time.  While Baker has been slinging it, he's struggled to secure any long-term contract.  He's bounced between teams, and even after success in Tampa, he still can't get anything signed.  A deal could get done, and depending on the terms, that could change my long-term view of Baker.  As things currently stand, I'd much rather add Mahomes to my rebuilding roster and know that I've got one spot filled for the long term, regardless of the season he has in 2026.  

As a contender, I'd probably avoid this move.  While Baker's future is uncertain, he's set up for another solid season.  With Mahomes coming off a torn ACL, I'd feel better with Baker as my QB if I'm looking to score points this season.  It may take a few weeks for Mahomes to get into form.

☕️Espresso Shot: Xavier Worthy ☕️

Up until this point, Worthy hasn’t been as advertised.  Everyone was hoping he would be the new Tyreek Hill, and it just hasn’t panned out.  He’s had some solid games here and there, but there’s been a lack of consistency, and his year two development was stunted by injury.  He enters year three as the likely WR2 in the offense behind Rashee Rice.  Despite the relatively underwhelming opening to his career, he’s still only 23 and fits perfectly on a rebuilding roster.  We’ve seen the upside for Worthy (more so in his rookie season than sophomore season), and he’s worth buying low on if you manage a team that isn't in contention this season.  There are a few factors that make Worthy a great add and hold for rebuilders.  He’s young, he’s explosive, and he’s tied to Patrick Mahomes.  While he won’t be a WR1 for fantasy, he can be a fun, high ceiling play going forward.  Add him and stash him if you’re rebuilding.

This is a nice pivot off an aging receiver.  When rebuilding, it's common to only think in terms of picks.  A strategy I am going to implement in my next rebuild revolves less around trading aging assets for picks, and more around acquiring younger players at the same position.  Normally, I would try to turn Terry purely into picks.  However, with the above trade, you're essentially getting two cracks at filling out your roster.  Worthy is already in the NFL, so we'll know if we need to pivot A LOT sooner than the rookies we'll be taking in drafts.  I think the addition of the 2nd really pushes this in a nice direction for a rebuilder.  I don't think I'd trade Terry straight for Worthy at this stage, so getting a little on top is excellent practice.  When trading aging assets, getting a younger player at the same position with draft capital on top will get your rebuild moving a lot faster than simply getting draft picks.  

☕️The Dark Roast: Travis Kelce☕️

Taylor Swift’s man is about to turn 37, and while he’s not quite as dominant on the field as he used to be, he’s still one of the top targets in this Chiefs’ offense.  Last season, he had his lowest point total since 2015, and STILL finished as the TE3!  It wasn’t a typical Kelce season, as it had many peaks and valleys.  He’s not the weekly anchor he used to be, but he’s still a TE with weekly Top 10 upside.  Last season, he gave managers nine finishes in the Top 10.  With retirement looming, he definitely isn’t a fit for all fantasy teams.  He’s perfect for teams who are all-in to win this season.  He won’t solve your TE position in the long term, but he can be some short-term duct tape to get a contender through the season.    

Let's take a look at a trade I'd make for Kelce.  Actually, let me correct myself: let's take a look at a trade I ACTUALLY made for Kelce:

Going into the season, I was looking a little thin at TE, only having Chig Okonkwo to throw into my lineup.  I had acquired Ricky in a previous trade with the intent of stashing him on my IR until next year to help with WR depth.  This trade hit my inbox, and it was hard to say no.  I know I have no longevity with Kelce, but he's still producing at a Top 5 level.  Even if he finishes Top 10, that's enough for my contending team.  The price for someone who can produce at this level is surprisingly low; if you are TE needy, definitely inquire about Kelce.  For those that are fans of Sharp Tracker trades, he seemed to be a throw-in in many deals.  However, I did see trades where he was dealt for Hunter Henry and Jahan Dotson, as well as another where he was dealt for Erick All and Justin Joly.  As a contender, I'd make both of these moves.  Rebuilders should steer clear of Kelce.
